Session on higher education competitiveness at the Hungarian Academy of Science

The competitiveness of higher education, the sustainability of quality education, the interpretation of university rankings and the change of students’ preferences were the topics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), Section of Economics and Law’s latest assembly and scientific session. The assembly was opened by Dr. Iván Bélyácz, President of the Section of Economics and Law, who emphasised the demand for the development of higher education. Dr. Ervin Balázs, Full Member of the HAS, President of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, gave a speech on the quality of mass education and the consequences of the introduction of the Bologna-system. Dr. Ádám Török, Secretary General of HAS and professor of the Faculty of Business and Economics in his presentation drew the audience’s attention to the awkwardness and shortcomings of rankings. Dr. Attila Chikán, Full Member of the HAS, idetified the connection between the country rankings and university rankings.

Dr. Barna Mezey, Full Member of the HAS, pointed out importance of publication productivity in terms of university rankings. András Schubert, Specialist of the Library and Information Centre of HAS, underlined the importance of the publishing activity of higher education institutions. Dr. György Fábry emphasised that the presence of rankings is inevitable, because the market called them to life. Dr. András Telcs, Doctor of the Academy, professor of the Faculty of Business and Economics, introduced the methodology, the difficulties and results of ranking Hungarian higher education institution based on the students’ preference list filled out during the application process. Dr. Gyöngyi Csuka, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Business and Economics, gave an overview of the results of a recent research investigating students’ preferences.

The international conference for Central European Heritage – Cultural Development Possibilities in historical cities – will be organized between 11-13 April, 2014, by the KultUnio Foundation with the support of Visegrad Fund. In addition to the professional program the tourism and cultural supply of Budapest will be presented, within the framework of sightseeing tours, along with the accompanying event of a Cultural Fair organized in the heart of the city.

2013 PhD Student Research Paper Award

A conference section

The Economics Section of the National Scientific Student Research Projects (OTDK) was hosted by the Faculty of Business and Economics of University of Pannonia between the 18th and 20th of April 2013. This is one of the most prestigious events organized for students studying economics from all over the country, where they can present the results of their researches. Participating in this conference is usually mentioned as the first step to be a successful expert in any economic field in the future.

The National Scientific Student Research Projects is held in every 2nd year in 16 different disciplines in different locations. The conference in this year broke a couple of records: approximately 650 research projects were nominated which is the highest number during the history of the event. It also means that more than 760 students from 32 universities arrived to Veszprém to present their research results.

After the scientific part of the conference the students and professors could enjoy the offered cultural programmes. One of the special guests was Csaba Vastag, the winner of the X-Factor Hungary in 2010 and the student of the Faculty, Péter Rozsnyói jazz pianist, the Caffé Bambini and the Pannon Universitas Band, which bands’ members are students of the university. The Faculty offered a new opportunity this year: visitors could do sightseeing in the regular way or by using QR codes.

III. Harsányi János Economic and Management Conference

On the 22nd  and 23rd of March, 2013 the Harsányi János Special Student Hostel organised the III. Harsányi János Economic and Management Conference, where the students from the Faculty of Economics, including students of Harsányi Special Stundent Hostel could present their research work and results.  The students did their research work with a university professor from September to February. These research works have several subjects, for example: International Economics, Project Management, Tourism or Marketing.
On the 22nd of March Dr. Lajos Szabó Acting Dean of the Faculty of Economic opened our conference and then Ferenc Karvalits the vice president of the Hungarian National Bank gave a presentation about the topic: Management in Crisis.
After Ferenc Karvalits’s presentation the students had the opportunity to present their work to the professional jury: one professor from the university and one person from a company: IIP, Tourinform, Beurer, Yara and AVIS.
On Saturday afternoon there was the announcement of results.

The winner from the MSc students was: Iván Varga (Relationship between Accounting and CSR).

From the BSc stundent the results:
1st place: Veronika Koós (Facebook privacy settings among university students)
2nd place: Marcell Kurbucz (Project Planning)
3rd place: Arnold Osvald (CSR in Hotels of Veszprém) and Balázs Boldoczki (Common Agricultural Policy)
Personally I think it was a really successful conference and all of the students can be proud of themselves, because they were very professional. Congratulations and see you next year!
