Within the framework of the Erasmus+ Program announced by the European Commission the „I-SICS – International Social Innovation Competition for Students and Adult Learners” project aims to raise the awareness of university students to the most important problems of their regions, and urge them to think in a socially responsible way, so that they can become effective and committed activists of their homelands.

THE INNOVATIVE CHARACTER OF THE PROJECT CAN BE DISCOVERED IN THREE MAIN ASPECTS:

1. The adaptation of good practices in the field of entrepreneurship and student competitions to a new field, that of social innovation.

2. The use of the International Social Innovation Competition as a communication channel, using it as an awareness raising campaign to draw the attention of individuals, companies, media, decision-makers and stakeholders on various other levels to the most important social issues and to urge them to act in a socially responsible way.

3. The creation of a Social Innovation Competition Kit, which will be a ready-to-use package of various materials that can be applied anywhere in Europe.

PERFORMED ACTIVITIES DURING THE PROJECT

In 2015, best practices, case studies and competition in connection with the field of social innovation have been gathered and examined by a complex research. The results of the research were presented in an information leaflet, namely the „I-ISCS Booklet”, which can be downloaded from the following link: http://isics.gtk.uni-pannon.hu/isics-booklet/

Based on the research results we announced the I-SICS International Social Innovation Competition, to which university/college students or adult learners above 18 could apply.

The task of the competitors were to develop up-to-date and useful ideas (products, services or models) which satisfy needs of the society and establish new social cooperation.

Each competitor had a mentor who helped during the planning, and in the preparation of the competition. Moreover the competitors also completed a training which is based on the „Social Enterprising Europe (SEE)” program in March of 2016. During the training the competitors also acquired useful entrepreneurial knowledge.

The regional rounds of the I-SICS competition were organised in May of 2016 by all partners, in which students and adult learners presented their project ideas in connection with social innovation. The regionally chosen best placed competitors competed on the international competition in 24-25 of August 2016 in Veszprem, at the University of Pannonia. Beside the competition a workshop were also organized from 21th to 27th of August. The location of the workshop was Balatonalmádi.

In the framework of the project a Social Innovation Competition Kit (I-SICS Kit) were compiled, which provide guidance to the organization of the competition on the field of social innovation, and can be applied all over Europe. The Kit gives a great opportunity to any institution to organize their own social innovation competition. The Kit contains the good practices, and the experiences collected previously the partners, and shared during the organization of their own competition. The composed Kit is based on the previously mentioned good practices, a guideline to anyone who is interested in the organization of social innovation competition.

The I-SICS Kit can be downloaded from the following link: http://isics.gtk.uni-pannon.hu/isics-kit/

Within the framework of the KA2-Cooperation and Innovation for Good Practices Erasmus+ Program announced by the European Commission the project will be carried out in cooperation with the following partners: University of Pannonia – Faculty of Business and Economics (Hungary), CVO Antwerpen (Belgium), Europa Consortium (Hungary), BIC Group s.r.o. (Slovakia), Regional Development Agency of Slavonia and Baranja (Croatia), Universitat Rovira I virgili (Spain).

Europe’s financial sector to expand amid low growth and rising inequality

Europe faces a decade of low growth, rising inequality in income and wealth, and decline or stagnation in workers’ wages.

A wide-ranging survey of 50 business school economists about the future of financial services in Europe also found that the unregulated growth of the so-called ‘shadow banking’ (or non-bank financial) sector could cause another 2008-style financial crisis in the next five to ten years.

The economists were asked to make predictions on subjects including the future role, structure and regulation of the financial sector; the impact of the sector on society; growth and inequality in Europe; and the future remit and responsibilities of the European Central Bank (ECB) and of the central banks of developed countries.

The survey, part of the Financialisation, Economy, Society and Sustainable Development (FESSUD) research project led by the University of Leeds, found that the benefits of growth and employment of the financial system had been greatly overestimated prior to the 2008 financial crisis.

While Europe’s financial system would remain the same or grow in the next five to ten years, this would not translate into wider economic growth. Growth in the euro area is forecast to remain below 2% and rising unemployment, welfare cuts and austerity will contribute to greater inequality in society.

The economists also predicted that there would be a slight or significant increase in inequality in income and wealth distribution in developed countries in the next five to ten years, while wage income as a share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would fall or remain unchanged.

Professor Malcolm Sawyer of Leeds University Business School, project leader of FESSUD, said:
“The survey portrays a financial services sector in Europe continuing to grow, but with the benefits for the citizens of Europe being limited and likely negative. The person in the street will continue to see rising inequality, stagnating wages and sluggish growth, and the financial sector will continue to act as a drag on sustainable growth.

“The findings on the growth of shadow banking in Europe are particularly concerning. As banks are further regulated, shadow banking will continue to grow with, at best, loose regulation. This along with the inherent fragilities of the financial system will increase instability and contribute to the next financial crisis.

“The messages are clear: there has to be fundamental reforms of the financial sector, its scope and influence. It is time for the financial sector to serve society, and not society serving the interests of the financial sector.”

The survey shows that the role of the ECB is expected to change, with economists predicting that it would encompass generating real economic growth in addition to its chief objective of maintaining price stability in the Eurozone. This broadening would be mirrored in the role of national central banks, which will also focus more on financial stability as well as inflation price stability and economic activity. There was consensus that the central banks of developed countries would retain inflation targets of around 2%.

FESSUD is a €10m research programme funded by the European Union and led by Leeds University Business School and involves 14 business schools in Europe and South Africa. The project has examined the dominance of the financial system over other parts of the European economy in the last 30 years and suggests reforms to support economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Key findings of the Future Expansion and Proliferation of Finance Delphi survey include:

The ‘shadow banking’ sector will expand due to poor regulation and as banks seek to avoid the impact of tighter regulations by conducting more activities off-balance sheet. This may lead to instability and a financial crash in the next five to ten years

The number of small, locally-oriented savings banks and co-operatives will continue to fall or will be encouraged to adopt the business models of private banks

Household savings rates will remain the same or be slightly higher than savings rates which were registered before the financial crisis of 2008

The revival of household lending, mainly through mortgages, will pose a moderate or significant risk for the financial system

Paper author Jesus Ferreiro, University of the Basque Country, and Professor Giuseppe Fontana of the University of Leeds, said: “The finance industry has not learned the lessons from the global financial crisis, and deep reform is needed to make it more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.”

Financialisation, Economy, Society and Sustainable Development (FESSUD) is a research project investigating the growth and impact of the financial system in Europe which suggests ways that the system might be reformed to support economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The Welcome reception on Sunday evening was in the Council Hall of the City of Amsterdam, where the Chief Procurement Officer of Amsterdam, Hans Dussel, welcomed the participants with an interesting presentation about social targets and economic targets in city procurement.

On Monday, two key note speakers presented after the official opening of the Conference in the VU University Aula. Professor Jan Fransoo (TU Eindhoven) dealt with the academic key note, while Stijn Kiens – Head Logistics Doctors without Borders (Médicins Sans Frontières) – had a fascinating presentation about the operations of setting up supply systems in crisis areas. „Effectiveness, rather than efficiency” and „independence rather than efficiency” where some of the criteria used in deciding who to partner with, how to maintain neutrality and most of all, how to help those in need. The main motivator was „outrage”. Outrage about what happened to certain tribes, nations or minorities. Stuff to make you think about things…

The remainder of the days was filled between 8.30 and 17.00 with hard work: presenting, discussing, meetings, Assembly, the usual conference activities. The evenings were spent on social activities, a buffet dinner in the wonderful Zuiderkerk on Monday and on Tuesday the Gala Conference Dinner in the famous marble hall of the Royal Institute of the Tropics. Here, the various awards for best papers were handed out, and the numerous bursaries that IPSERA has for promising young talents. The IPSERA Best Paper went to Nadine Kiratli et.al. (Maastricht University) for her paper on Team Creativity. The IFPSM Best Paper with managerial implications went to Cees Gelderman et.al. (OU Heerlen) for his work on the role of Critical Incidents in designing Globalisation Strategies. The Nevi Zorg Best Paper in Health care procurement went to Fredo Schotanus et.al. (university Twente) for the work on Cooperative procurement.

A special award was given for the first time in the history of IPSERA: the Life Time Achievement Award. It was awarded to Prof. Attila Chikán, for his work in the field of Purchasing and Supply Management.

The 24th Conference of the International Purchasing Education and Research Association (IPSERA) was hosted by VU University Amsterdam and organised together with the University of Pannonia, Veszprém. More than 200 participants from more than 20 countries presented and discussed more than 145 conference papers during three and a half days, which included a Doctoral Workshop and a special Educators Conference as pre-Conference events.

Altogether, it was a very successful conference and I would like to thank my Team members of the local Organising Committee for the very good cooperation!

The topics showed a great variety. The 17 different presentations focused on relevant issues such as teleworking, home sharing, youth migration, gamification etc. The assessing board consisted of the last year winners, Balázs Csáforda and Tamás Szikszai, Ádám Horváth and Robert Roboz from FiveStar! Creative Consulting and Erzsébet Csibi, Higher Education and Professional Representative from Pearson. The best presentation was on ‘The North-Korean economy: Behind the curtain’ by Kitti Molich and Ádám Stefán, while the best presenter was Anita Mohlasz. They along with the second and third place presenters were awarded by valuable and practical books that can help in academic and career life by Pearson. This event gave great possibilities to students to co-work, to practice their presentation skills and gain feedback from different perspectives. Written by Edit Komlósi

The program began at Continental in Veszprem, where the students attended a lecture by Peter Tóth and a plant tour. The Clayton State University students were led by Dr. Margaret Thompson and the University of Pannonia students were led by Edit Komlósi. This visit was part of a multi-city tour for the Clayton State University students, which includes Budapest, Veszprem, and Prague. The group visited the impressive Herend Porcelain Manufacturing Company and spend a sunny afternoon exploring Balatonfüred and Veszprém. As part of the program, the American students attend businesses, participate in cultural tours, and work on collaborative presentations with the University of Pannonia students. This was the second time Presentation Day was organised with the American students but the first when the Hungarian BSc and the American MBA co-created their mutual presentations via social media three weeks before presenting. Dr. Margaret Thompson also met Dr. Zoltán Kovács, the acting dean to discuss further cooperation possibilities.
